/ About this event

Join us for a salon exploring how speculative design and Hollywood concept worlds end up shaping the technologies, infrastructures, and decisions we build in real life.

Speakers: Danica Vallone (President of Making Space: A Creative Space Agency ), Christian Lorenz Scheurer (Senior concept artist for Dune, Matrix, Fifth Element) and Dali Yu (Head of Industrial Design at Vast) Moderator: Case Miller (Special Projects)

The conversation will feature Danica Vallone, President and co-founder of Making Space Agency, a design, engineering, and prototyping studio working across aerospace and entertainment with clients including NASA, Axiom Space, Sierra Space, Vast, Disney, Netflix, and Warner Bros. She also serves as Creative Director at Global Effects and Designer in Residence at UC San Diego’s Design Lab, bridging filmmaking, aerospace, and speculative design.

Dali Yu is Head of Industrial Design at Vast, where he leads industrial design for Haven-1, the company’s commercial space station. His work focuses on translating the extreme technical constraints of human spaceflight into intuitive, human-centered environments, spanning interiors, crew systems, controls, sleep, mobility, and everyday life in microgravity. At Vast, he works closely with engineers and astronaut advisors to shape how people may live and work in the next generation of orbital habitats.

Christian Lorenz Scheurer is a Swiss-born concept artist and art director who has shaped the visual worlds of The Fifth Element, The Matrix, Titanic, Superman, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, John Wick 3, Aquaman, and Dune: Prophecy, as well as games including Final Fantasy IX and Spore. He specializes in high concept architecture, vehicles, creatures and characters for major feature films, video games and theme parks. Feature films he has worked on have garnered a total of 16 academy awards.

Case Miller is the co-founder of Special Projects, a firm that specializes in systems design for hardware and infrastructure for domains like humanoid and industrial robotics, aerospace, biotech and HCI.

For designers, creative technologists, architects, engineers, founders, investors, and anyone interested in how imagined futures become physical ones.
