China is pushing a new type of “soft power” with its open, low-cost AI models, gaining enormous influence and good will across the world. Silicon Valley is deeply divided, yet many developing nations – and U.S. companies – are choosing options from Alibaba, DeepSeek and Moonshot over the closed, costly software of most American tech giants. Will China shape the future of AI, and achieve its goal of “global AI leadership” by 2030? Is an alternative path of global collaboration possible?
